Descent into the Antequera Canyon
A genuine alternative to the Masca hike: this pirate bay can be hiked every day with complete flexibility!
This hike to Antequera Bay is a real insider tip in the Anaga Mountains: small groups, hiking to a natural sandy bay with a swim in the Atlantic with pick up by a water taxi (zodiac) to Teresitas Beach..
Antequera – a hidden canyon in the Anaga Mountains
NEU! The hike into the Antequera Canyon is our genuine alternative to the famous Masca Canyon: bookable every day, no entrance tickets, untouched nature and an still a real insider tip in the Anaga Mountains!
After the pick up in the south of Tenerife, the tour continues to the north-east of the island via Santa Cruz to the famous Anaga Mountains. The hikes starts in Igueste de San Andrés. It is very important that you wear ankle-high hiking boots for this decent into the canyon!
The old goat path winds its way up the mountain through a side valley between green terraces and plantations. It is said that the best mangoes on the island grow here! Igueste de San Andrés is famous for its humid and warm climate. The Anaga Mountains with their trade winds provide plenty of water and thus you find fertile fields and plantations. In the upper part, cactus and succulents line the hiking trail. Once you reach the ridge, you have a great view back to the sea and the rugged coastline all the way to Santa Cruz. The steep climb is over, and a cooling breeze feels good!
Now we are heading down into the Antequera Canyon. In winter time, there is lush vegetation with a small stream. In the summer months, it tends to dry up. The walls rise higher and higher on the right and left, and you can experience how wild and unspoilt the Antequera Canyon in the Anaga Mountains is. Apart from a few wild goats, you won’t encounter any other groups here.. It’s wonderful that places like this still exist in Tenerife! And then…the sea and beack come into sight!
The Bay of Antequera boasts a huge natural (black) sandy beach. If you want to cool off and swim in the Atlantic Ocean, let’s go!
The highlight and conclusion of the hike in the Antequera Gorge is the return trip by water taxi. From a small pier in the bay, the rubber dinghy travels along the spectacular coastline to Teresitas Beach. On this trip, you will see how the sea has eroded large lava caves out of the cliffs. Wild rock formations and vibrant colours, combined with the green and white Atlantic Ocean, offer magnificent photo opportunities.
It is not without reason that stories of the pirate bay of Antequera are still told today; this tour is unique in Tenerife!
We guarantee a small group with a maximum of 8 hikers.. The water taxi also only has a maximum of 12 seats!
